Using a 22 with a plastic-shotshell cap loaded with 12's or 9's presents an interesting challenge, but using a pistol is a major handicap, over a rifle, which is a major handicap itself, over a shotgun.

What you want to ask for are "target loads" (velocity in the 1145-1300fps range) in whatever gauge shotgun you're going to be using. These should be #8 shot or # 7 1/2 shot - #9 will work too.

To give a bit of an idea about .22 shot shells, you can shoot one out of a pistol and into the ceiling of the house, and it will not penetrate all the way through. So, with that bit of info (newly acquired for me) I don't think that .22 shot shell will do much more than scratch a clay pigeon while it's in flight.

My father in law decide to do this last week. He went into the attic and shot some critter he had trapped up there.... Not really a comforting thing to hear when you are sitting on the couch watching TV underneath where the trap is at....

Actually my shootin' pal's and I will shoot clays w/ a 22 lr, semi auto rifle. It's quite challenging, but if your looking to buy your friends some ammo for their shotguns, you want #12 bird shot shells.
Incidentally CCI brand ammo does make a 22 lr 'shot shell', instead of a solid projectile, it's filled with bunches of very small pellets. An interesting concept in semi-lethal ammo, I know a guy up my way who loads so his first two are shotshells, and if your still coming after that, well...

HEADS UP....I'm JD not DJ.....

FYI...You aren't going to be able to hit many clay pigeons with 22 birdshot (But they do make it in 22LR caliber though)
