Being that you had to stand the whole time, I would say none, but I don't know if it was because of housekeeping that you stood the whole time.
OKAY..I'm just kidding!
I think you meant that you "stayed" in the hotel?
At any rate, I am not used to tipping the housekeeping when I stay in a hotel unless they have really gone out of the way and done that little bit extra.

These people that say you don't tip maids...NOT TRUE.
I worked as a Housekeeper for a summer, and lemme tell you, it's not a great job.
you clean up peoples **** [quite often, literally] everyday. I don't know where these people come from half the time, but suddenly they think that if they rent a hotel room, and that 'it's theirs'. Well no, you paid to stay in OUR room. We can certainly kick you out of it if you are loud, disrespectful, or just plain messy.
Without refund.
We serve you, much like a waiter would serve his guests. But, with a few differences. We are practically at your disposal 24/7. Oh yeah, and we actually have to deal with cleaning up condoms and puke. Also the spilled beer that has soaked into the carpet for more than a day and the smell of your giant **** you clogged the toilet with three days ago.
So if you screw with out rooms, we will forgive you if there is a tip. If you do not leave a tip, please, don't stay at our hotel ever again. Some hotels "blacklist" people. Or at least keep a log of who did what.
We don't have to change the sheets or clean the toilet/shower.

But in answer to your question, it all depends on the mess you made. however much you feel is acceptable worth of mess another human has to clean up and if you feel that the housekeepers and general staff was good to you. Around five would be average.

You only "stood" in the hotel?

I wouldn't tip if they didn't even have to change the sheets after you...

Just kidding - you should ALWAYS tip in the United States... for EVERYTHING... but the amount of a service tip varies according to what you can afford.

Some people go with 15% in restaurants but that is not practical for a hotel stay... so I would say $3 to $7 depending on what you are comfortable with.

(and the answerers above have a bigger problem with theft BECAUSE they are not the type to leave a tip)

Having worked in the service industry before, I was always happy if the customers left me anything at all...

It really angered me when people would order me around and not realize that while they were enjoying their holiday, I was barely scraping by on my "just above minimum" pay.

I've never understood tipping someone for doing their job (though I'd probably feel different if I was a hotel housekeeper!). I could see if it was a wait person, or someone else who gets paid very little because tips are expected, but a hotel housekeeper gets paid a regular wage. If you just want to tip, then leave what you want, but I wouldn't feel like I had to.

I stay in hotels quite a bit and I usually leave $2 per night, unless the housekeeping staff has gone out of their way to do something extra for me.

as a general rule, tips are about $5.00 a day, more if the housekeeper, went out of her/his way to do something special for you.

as for the person who said, housekeepers are paid enough, and don't need tips, he's wrong... they are generally paid, minimum wages, and work only about 24 hours a week, hardly enough to survive, and they count upon their tips.

You do not tip maids. They get a salary that does not account for tips, whereas waiteresses get a much lower wage to account for tips.
