I now neither faith knows the pure pleasure of a BLT, but its a question that made me wonder.

I'm watching a show on NG and the showed all the medical research being done on pigs. They are also looking into other organs too.

I can't speak for Islam, but in Judaism we have this thing called pikuach nefesh, the obligation to save a life in jeopardy, which overrides anything. If xenotransplantation is the only thing that will save a Jew's life, he must do it, no matter from which animal the part comes.

Peace

Yes, LadySuri is absolutely right. In Judaism, in order to save a life we are **required** to break all the commandments, except for three negative ones: murder, idolatry and sexual immorality. Thus, using the valve from a pigs' heart--or medicine derived from pigs--is not an issue if there is no other alternative.

I was going to answer the question, but then I saw Lady Suri and Mark S. had already done so. So I'm just going to back up their answers- yes, Jews can have transplants from pigs.
(Even if there wasn't a life-threatning situation, I don't think it would be a problem. The Torah forbids us from eating pigs, not from deriving benefit from them).

There are alternatives to pig valves. There are totally mechanical valves, and are more widely used that pig valves.

edit: Most insulin today is made using recombinant DNA technology, and is human insulin

Modern science will soon prove that any organs from the pig or any other "unclean" animal that the God Yahweh warns us to stay away from for disease prevention purposes in Leviticus chapter 11 are causing other unnecessary diseases to be transferred to the human body that will force doctors to stop using them in all humans not just Jews or Muslims.

No, its a matter of faith and it goes beyond life! .. if any Jew or a Muslim has different view on this i don't mind but i would prefer to end my life rather.

NOTE: Islam permits certain acts under certain situations which are very complex and detail to write here. Plz research yourself

I don't know about Islam but Judaism says that pig valves are OK.

Would a JW have a blood transfusion to save a life?
These kinds of beliefs would rather die than compromise their future in Paradise.
I'll be interested if any Jews or Muslims answer this question

It's not only the heart valves, here. Where do you think insulin comes from?
