Easiest way is to put a sauce pan with water on the stove let it boil then place a sauce pan with the chocolate on top watching and slowly stiring as it melts, dont let the chocolate boil. And be very careful the steam from the water in the bottom pan can burn you very easily. Good luck and Have fun. The chocolate can be melted again and again.

Yes it will definitly burn. Grab a pot and place about 2 inches water in the bottom. Place a second pan (I have a metal mixing bowl that I use) on top of the first then pour your chocolate into the top pan. Turn the heat to medium low and continuously stir the chocolate once you see it begin to melt. Be very careful not to allow any water to get into the pan with the chocolate or it will clump up and be ruined. As soon as it is melted, grab a towel and remove the pan with chocolate in it from the heat and use as usual.

You either have to use a double boiler, or melt the chocolate in the water. If you're going to do it directly in the water, don't use much, just enough that there's about a 1/4 inch in a small sauce pan. And use low heat. It'll take longer, but you won't burn it if you look away for a second.

Melting chocolate over direct heat is a great way to get scorched chocolate.
Half-fill a pot with water, then place the chocolate in a second pot, fitting it securely on top of the first. The heat from the boiling water will melt the chocolate gently and heat it more evenly than direct heat from a flame.
Or you could get yourself a double boiler, which is the same thing, with pots that are made to fit into each other.

You can do it in the pot but it might catch and burn. The best way to melt chocolate is in a bowl over simmering water. Get a bowl that fits neatly over your saucepan (not plastic obviously, stainless steel is best. Put a little water in the saucepan and bring it to the bowl. Reduce heat too a simmer. Place chocolate in bowl and stir until melted. Make sure the water does not touch the bottom of the bowl, and no water touches the chocolate.

I read everyone else's answer and they pretty much hit the nail on the head. An easier way is simply by adding a couple teaspoons of milk. This will prevent the chocolate from hardening too quickly so you can use it as a dip. For strawberries, pretzels, etc. Good luck, enjoy!

take a sauce pan fill with water, take a smaller pan and put the chocolate in it. When the bigger pan boils, place the smaller pan in it and the chocolate will melt. If you have a whisk, whisky to get the chocolate smooth...

if your careful, no.
it is better to have water in a pot; boiling. and then another pot on top with the chocolate. this will melt it better
or just zap in the the mircowave, untill most of the chocolate in melted and then stir it and everything should be good.
