my one year old just switched to whole milk. At the same time (5 days ago) - he got all of his 1 year old immunizations. He is now throwing up after most of his milk bottles. and he has horrible diarreah. i called the doctor who said it was probably a virus and if it didn't pass in 48 hours to bring him in. he seems so thirsty all the time (dehydration from vomiting?) and i am wondering if this a stomach virus would last this long??? (5 days) or if he's allergic to milk? or could this be a reaction to his immunizations - or has it been too long? he was on formula during the first year of his life and never had an issue. But he is now throwing up 3 to 4 times a day and his little bottom is so raw from how many times i've had to change his diaper. i have quit giving him the whole milk for the time being. no one in our family has any food allergies - could he be allergic or is this a virus or something worse? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ugg. I feel for you. Keep him hydrated. It's fine to give him water or watered down juice or pedialite or whatever he'll drink and keep down. I used to give my babies sips of water from a straw- a drop at a time- in order to keep fluid in them. It's really important. I think the doctor should see him first thing. You don't say that he's running a fever but if he is, it's even more important to push the fluids. Is he keeping anything down? Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast- (BRAT) all easy on the upset belly. If I were you, I'd just lay off the milk until this passes. I don't think it's an allergy b/c you say he tolerated the formula just fine. It's probably just a nasty virus. Good luck to you.

There is always a possibility of milk intolerance at any time, actually. My daughter had a problem with milk for a while and we used Lactaid for quite a long time, it definitely relieved her discomfort.
It wouldn't be a reaction to the vaccinations.
Poor thing, the rawness in the diaper area is so painful. You did the right thing in stopping the whole milk for now, see what happens after a few days, then perhaps you can try it again, and if he starts up with the troubles again, you will have an answer.

Definitely let the pediatrician know of the situation and perhaps he/she will give you some other ideas. Good luck, I hope that this can be resolved soon.

I am not a doctor but you normally have a fever with a virus. See if he is running one. Did your doctor see your son when he diagnosed this? They really should before they decide something important like this. This could be that it is to much of a change with his milk and getting his shots also. He could be allergic .Take him in and let your doctor see him. Let him sit in tepid water to help his diaper rash. In fact, a little on the cooler side. Make sure he drinks plenty. Give him Pediolite. It is for this.Check the age limit thing on it because I'm not real sure about that. You can get the flavored kind. This could have been started because of the shots but it should not last this long. In fact, you could take him to the emergency room if you can't get in first thing in the morning. I myself would probably take him now but I get really picky with kids.Children are resilient but they also lose strength fast when this is going on. Bless the little one. I will be praying with you for him.

It is possible that it could be a virus but he could also be lactose intolerant. Taking him off of all milk and dairy products for a few days is a good idea. Make sure he is getting enough liquids such as pedialyte though. Once the vomiting and diarrhea is gone, you could try milk again and see if the symptoms return. My daughter is lactose intolerant and we buy her the lactose free milk such as Lactaid. You can also try soy milk. Typically with lactose intolerance, there is a "safe" level of lactose that they can tolerate. Finding that level is the tricky part. My daughter can handle small (1/4 cup or so) of ice cream, she refuses to eat cheese (she's 3), and yogurt. Good luck!

If he's been on milk based formula he's probably not allergic to milk, although it can never hurt to get him tested at the allergist (I had this done for my girls when they turned one for similar issues as you and I am so glad I did). The ped can do a test to see if he's milk intolerant. You may just want to let this pass, then when he's all better, slowly introduce milk (2oz mixed with 4oz formula) and gradually increase until he tolerates it ok. If you he doesn't tolerate it, then you know there's a problem and you should bring him in.

It sounds like a form of gastritis, where nothing you eat stays down, and it causes pain and throwing up and diarrhea. If you are concerned you should pack him up for a trip to the ER and see what they have to say about it, it doesn't sound like throwing up that many times a day is a good thing.

A milk allergy or lactose intolerance is very possible.

Get him checked out just as your doctor told you.
