I know that PetSmart only carries one gender at a time, due to the fact that rats tend to.....multiply if they find any way to get to the opposite gender, and the possibility of accidently selling apregnant rat.

It's a good Idea for them to do only sell one sex, however, I'm looking for a young male, so pregnancy isn't really an option XD

Thanks :)

NO, rats are very complicated, intelligent, and intricate creatures! Only very simple animals, like worms, have the capabilities of both sexes.

I work for Petsmart and so does my boyfriend. His store is female while mine is male. His accidentally got 1 male mouse and now they have 4 females that just had babies and possibly some others that are already pregnant. They are SO cute as babies but the store has to send them back to the company...

Anyways... Petco usually has both genders. I don't like the Petcos around where I live but I've heard some are better... ;P I have 3 female rats all from Petsmart and they are so precious! Good luck! :D

I would recommend adopting from a breeder, before you purchase from Petco. I bought my little boy from the Pecto in VA. He's about 3-4 months old, and a real sweetheart, but he wasn't very well socialized and he also came with a nasty mycroplasma (sp) infection. I've been working very hard to be his friend over the past 3 weeks, as well as administering his medication twice a day. A $100.00+ later in Vet bills, he's much better, friendlier and I'm glad I can give him a good life. Just be wary of Petco rats, as I have learned that their rats come from Rat Mills where they tend to disregard the quality of health of the rats they are breeding, and the temperament. Not to mention the people at Petco usually don't know a lot about rats. If you ask about what types of rats they have (dumbo, rex, etc), they kind of give you a blank stare and just say something along the lines of, "uh, we just have rats". They also don't have much respect for them there either, which is a real shame.. Just remember, if you purchase from Petco, you are going to have some work cut out for you. Check craigslist for breeders producing well socialized baby rats in your area.

The PetSmart close to you may only sell males. Just give them a call and ask which they carry.

Please get two if you are looking for a rat. I cannot stress enough how much better of a life they have with a companion!

Dear Jess,

The pet shop able to sell both male and female. But it must be keeping separate cages. Call or visit and ask them about they have young male or not.

Check with local animal shelter of Humane Society to see if they have young male rat. You can check the information on their web site it the animal is adoptable, and also you can ask at at the desk to see they may have in the backroom but not adoptable yet. In this case, you can request to put it on hold and able to see the animal later before they put it out to public view. I adopted guinea pigs and birds from them, and they are my babies.

I believe that rats can get into other places. I had a school project a long time ago, and one rat popped his caged door open, and popped the second open, and got in to cuddle with the other.
Isn't that sweet? :)
But I would go with not asking Yahoo, but actually asking PetCo.

Yes, most stores sell both sexes. It's very easy to be fooled...even the so-called experts are fooled from time to time. Please look at the links below for sexing information. And rats do need companionship, so please consider adopting a pair. Also I'll provide a link for a good rescue..even if they're not close to you, they may know some animals that need homes near you...good luck!

sometimes they put boys in one cage and girls in another. i guess it really depends on the store. the one where i live carries both genders just in different cages. most pet stores do.
