Why did people invent religions?

I don't think religion in general was not invented, it emerged naturally from characteristics of the the human mind. It may have a survival benefit (say, though social cohesion) or may just be a side effect of other useful traits (seeking causes, projecting social instincts on nature, etc.) -- either way it evolved as a part of the human psyche.

Specific religions developed most likely as peoples myths, legends, and explanations changed over time and cultural evolution. At certain points, new religions were founded, but usually as off-shoots of existing religions and always influenced by elements of the culture they develop in (a cultural mutation) -- and these too change with time. These religions have provided a variety of things at times, including explanations for natural and human phenomena, social cohesion, and justifications for laws and customs (among other things).

well there are four answers to that.
1. Religion is a way of controlling the masses
2. People can/could not explain natural occurances
3. People are scared of being the only aware creatures in the universe
4. God came to earth and spoke through profets and a burning bush.

They needed an explaination of the unknown. Like why the volcano erupted, why did the wave wash out half the village? They needed to believe in a higher power to help cope with the hard times of life.

It is true today, people still need religion because they are afraid of what's come.

People found religions because they think they have found divine light or some kind of inner peace by practicing said religion and want to share it with the world. However, once that found dies, and there are millions of people who whole-heartedly believe in that system of beliefs, it becomes an easy launching platform for anybody who wants to gain power. And who better to have as followers than people who think you will help them get into heaven?

the problem isn't belief, its that people look toward institutions and books to tell them what is right, rather than God or themselves. People need to stop being sheeple and think for themselves.

We were created with a spiritual need, we recognize it and everybody has a different opinion of how things actually are. Based on those opinions and initially, in ancient times, not knowing so many of the things we know today people would make up gods and practices that they believed caused or solved problems that they had.

Because at that time long ago mankind did not have the knowledge to properly understand God's scientific based instructions. So that is how religion started. Mankind's misunderstanding of science.

Not all religion is invented. Only the non-Christian idol worshipping religions are invented. Biblical based Christianity is a true religion that is given to us by God.
