I just bought a 1994 1500 series ram 4x4 with a 5.2 318.

Truck was running excellent and all of sudden it just wants to die when I depress the accelerator. There is a hissing noise coming from around the upper intake.I looked for faulty vacuum hoses and unplugged the Coolant temp sensor but no better.

I didnt check the EGR valve yet,or maybe on those they don't have one,I am used to Chevy trucks.

Some people have told me maybe the cat converter plugged up,and it blows air back towards the engine, causing the hissing sound.I didnt check for fault codes yet, the check engine light is not on,but it's on when I first turn the key so I know it's working.

This truck had the head overhauled not too long ago says the seller...

Any suggestions??

There is what looks like a connector in the back of the intake. But no loose connector around it...I'm puzzled...could the cat conv cause it??I was hearing the ceramics rattle in there for 2-3 days.

it does sound like the convertor is plugged . the peices have lodged at the back of the convertor. the 2 easiest things you could try are to beat on the convertor to move the peices around, or remove the upstream o2 sensor. its on the front of the cat. if you remove it and it runs better you know the cat is plugged. this will let out some exhaust pressure so it doesn't get pushed into the intake when the intake valves open.

Don't know if a plugged convertor will cause the hissing sound but it might since a head was off the engine, could be leaking in the vicinity of the exhaust manifold. If you heard the ceramics rattling 2-3 days ago and all is quiet now, the ceramics have lodged inside the housing, the exhaust is probably NOT totally plugged but will be sooner or later. The ceramics in my '92 Dakota 3.9 rattled for almost a year before I lost power and it did not help my gas mileage any either.

check it for loose vacuum lines on it,you could also have lost power to the fuel pump or something when one is running good and dies like that you have to check everything on it,it sounds like something on it has came loose, especially since you said it had been worked on the previous owner may not have got everything back on right, good luck on finding it,
