My niece is 1 1/2, and she's developed this terrible habit of chewing on her blankets. All her blankets. The problem is that she's been chewing them so much she swallows pieces of them. I made her a baby blanket that she loves terribly, but it's made partly of yarn. My sister noticed the problem when she changed her diaper and there were pieces of yarn everywhere, then caught her almost choking on a piece of the yarn. She has plenty of chew toys, but just seems to relax by chewing on her blankets. My sister's had to take all her blankets away, because chastising her just doesn't seem to be working, but my niece really misses her blanket!! Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there some kind of bad tasting baby-safe spray you can apply to the blanket or some other trick to get her out of the habit of chewing on the blankets? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thank you so much!!!

Her mother needs to give her something better to chew on. I recommend phoning the dentist and the pediatrician to see what they would do. A child's GI tract is small. There is no way of telling how much is enough to cause a blockage. Taking the blanket away is a good move. I wouldn't put any substance on anything a child chews on, especially tobacco spray. Most people are allergic to tobacco (that's why allergists don't test for it) and the child could easily go into anaphylactic shock.
Good luck and best wishes.

My son STILL does this--and he's 6!!! It turns out he has an anxiety disorder, and it is a way he comforts himself...to my great consternation. I try to redirect him to a healthier way of releaving his feelings of frustration, but of course you can't do that while a child is sleeping. For now, I think the best thing to do is take away the blankets. There is a product called chewlery that comes in both chewy plastic and soft terry cloth that is safe to chew on.

It could be anything from a nervous habit to something being wrong with her teeth...or she could just like to chew! take the blankets away, and try giving her something else safe to chew on. i assure you, unless its a substancial amount of yarn or cloth being swallowed.....it wont cause any problems with her insides.

You can try dipping the part she chews in vinegar or oil of clove (smells good- tastes BAAAD). However, this is a really bad habit and I'm kind of on your sister's side in that I'd take them away completely until the habit was broken. Good luck to you.

This sounds harsh but there is a tobacco spray , that my neighbors used with their son, when he started to chew on his stuffed animals. You would have to google it to find it, but it works really well. It doesn't burn their toungue, it's more of an unpleasent sour sensation, and it doesn't ruin fabrics. Hope that helps.
