we're in melbourne, fla and my husband was stung by a bee or wasp while in a nursery. I pulled the long black stinger out and ever now, several hours later after icing it feels like a fist at the site. A totally new response to a sting. What might it have been?

This is the body's reaction to the venom in the stinger. You shouldn't have pulled the stinger out because some stingers still contain venom sacs which can cause more venom to be injected into the skin. But what's done is done. Make sure you watch him tonight for any signs of an allergic reaction. If he doesn't have one then he should be fine. Also make sure to clean the area and watch for signs of infection through the next couple of days.

Signs of infection:

Spreading redness
Increased pain
Warmth to the touch
and Pus/Discharge

If any of these occur with the next few days he needs to see a doctor. Apply heat to the area and Tylenol for pain.

It could be several things
1.The side effects off the sting
2.He could be allergic to bee's
I would suggest going to get it looked at, at the doctors asap
*heres what you could do for now though

When I got stung by a "bee" I got a bump on the bottom of my foot that hurt when I walked on it, and was itchy. I'm not allergic to bees so my parents didn't take me to the doctor. but it was still pretty painful.
I hope that yur husband feels better soon
=)
*remember that wasps and bees are different and I don't know for certain but I'm guessing that they're symptoms are probably different
*I would put ice on it if the area is painful or swollen though

When you pulled out the stinger, if you didn't scrape it out, then you forced more venom into the sight. And the ice, while it helps with the pain, will add to the 'hardness'. Instead of that, make a paste of baking soda and put on there. Or you can use vinegar on a cloth. Best solution of all is to use benedryl cream or crush up a benedryl and water and make a paste of it. In about 12 hrs it will begin to subside. If he isn't having trouble breathing or anything by now, then he'll be okay.

I just got stung recently and mine felt like that for the first 2 days. It definitely would not feel better after a few hours. I've been stung by bees a lot and i've always had a lot of pain, especially in the first 24 hours.

Yes it can be. I was stung once by a wasp and half my forearm arm was hard like that. It took me 10 days to have a normal arm again and it itched and burned like mad.
I was obviously very sensitive to the sting. There isn't much you can do except keep ointments on it that pertain to insect bites, trying to keep down the itch and burn, and wait it out till the poison dissipates from the area.

bee or wasp stings can last for several days. what you have to worry about is allergies. if your husband is allergic to bee/wasp sting, this will cause complications even death. go see a doctor.
