They're definitely overrated, both by their own estimations and that of others. They're excellent contributors to the world of martial arts, but the idea that BJJ is the end-all, be-all that conquers every style and fighter out there is ridiculous.

The Gracies created BJJ: Not MMA. MMA has been around a lot longer than their reign, and there's arts like Daido Juku Kudo that are similar to MMA, that came out before the UFC came into effect as an example.

I don't think they are over-rated, but I think the way they present BJJ, and others is sometimes a serious overstatement. I most definitely think groundfighting is essential, but true self-defense is about being able to control the tempo of a fight where ever it goes. That isn't to imply that grapplers can't strike, but if xyz person trains in boxing and Kodokan Judo (The art BJJ is dervied from): Who's going to be doing better at the same skill level? I don't think a hard striker that knows how to sprawl is going to make for an easy defeat.

BJJ is good to tell all the TMA people that think their art is t3h ultimate that they need groundwork and more toughness, or they'll suffer, but a lot of the videos I've seen aren't much better than the same crap that you get from mexcali ryu: "Train in my art, and you'll kill everyone!"

A local MMA place opens up in December, and I might be going. It's eclectic though: BJJ, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, and Capoeira. Just what I like. ^_^

I still respect it for what it's worth, and while the potential for mcdojoism can happen: It isn't likely, and 95% of BJJ black belts probably didn't get their belts from striking a pose.

Some of these answers sicken me, the Gracie's created MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. No other family has contributed more to the martial arts community.

not at all , Royce Gracie spent his prime kicking the crap out of 3 people a night , no weight classes no silly @$$ rules and he was 6'1" tall and weighed 180 lbs soaking wet, none of these guys today could do what he did in the beginning, go rent the first 3 ufc tapes , you will see...
If not for the Gracies BJJ wouldn't be nearly what it is today..

Not at all, they are some of the founders of brazilian jiu jitsu, if it was not for them there would probally be no ufc (One of the gracies was a partial owner of the first ufc)

Plain and simple they not only helped out to BJJ, they helped out martial arts period....

No...
But maybe slightly in the sense that sometimes it's either them or reporters make it sound like they were the only ones rolling around on the ground when it came to fighting.
