I always tell them I'm sorry I have the wrong number because I know how weird and anxious I get when someone calls and just hangs up. The world is a scary and unpolite place and practicing good manners makes it a little more bearable.

There is nothing wrong in apologizing for dialing the wrong number. It can happen to anyone and I have done it a few times. I usually tell the person that I am sorry and they can be very nice about it. I use to get phone calls everyday from someone and I still do not know who it is and I finally had to have my number changed. I have also had people who have apologized to me for dialing my number by accident. One guy called my house in the middle of the night and then he felt bad because he had called the wrong number.

If and when I do dial the wrong number I tell the person on the end of the line that I am sorry for disturbing them. It do's not happen much with me, I don't call many people.

Even before nearly everyone had caller ID, I still always apologized and ended the call with a "good bye". Everyone has mis-dialed, but the difference is the two seconds it takes to say a simple "sorry" instead of just hanging up with no explanation. It's such a small and easy way to be decent.

I absolutely agree. It is common courtesy to tell the person on the other end of the line that you are sorry you disturbed them. If only everyone could have that kind of sense, it makes you think that those who don't, don't have the brains God gave a goose! Hanging up is just wrong. It's better to take two seconds and apologize rather than to run and hide.
Well done for your common sense!

I apologize. If I don't know it until I get the answering machine, I do a quick "I'm sorry; I mis-dialed" message. I think it's not only courteous, but practical. On some occasions when I've just hung up, I get a return call asking why I called and hung up. A lot of phones can identify who (what number) called. Just apologize quickly so the recepient doesn't wonder about it.

I think hanging up is pretty normal as one would be embarrassed to have dialed the wrong no. On the other hand, if one were to apologize, the party on the other line may feel that it was an intentional call rather than a mistake, bcoz I feel that ppl rarely do apologize..But you're exhibiting etiqutte & gd manners!

This is one of my pet peeves - If I realize I've dialed the wrong number, I just hang up. If I get a number on my caller-ID, and no message, I assume it was a wrong number and don't sweat it. I've had people call me back, demanding to know why I called them... get over yourself, I dialed a wrong number and hung up. BFD. Since I don't call people in the middle of the night, I figure it's ok if I mis-dial once in a while.

I say:"Sorry, I dialed the wrong number." and hang up. I'm too busy to be overly polite with accidental strangers on the telephone. I don't think that is rude at all.

Usually when I dial a wrong number I didn't realize I did. So I always apologize. It seems like the right thing to do.
