does anyone know why they do it?

I have 2 dogs and only one does it the other doesn't...and until her I had had 5 other dogs none of them did it.. I figured it was normal since she is health...just wondered if anyoen ekse experienced this funny trait

yup. i think they do this because they need to find a perfect spot. usually they do that to mark their area.

It depends on the area he's in. If we are in the yard he goes back and forth, if we are in the "free run" area behind the school he circles and goes back and forth.
They are literally finding the "perfect" spot. They sniff out the sign posts from other dogs and leave their own. If they don't find one they make one. Feces/urine and the scents carried in them give information about the individual dog, think of it like the personals section of a paper.

All of mine have done that...sometimes I think it's because she wants to stay out longer!! LOL! As far as I know, they're looking for their own marked territory. Have you noticed that he/she goes in the same place a lot?

My dog does that. She has such a regiment that I know that she will go after the third try. It's like a little dance she does-swing, swing, swing, POO.

Yes, especially on these dark frosty nights.
He does it to land me in hospital with pneumonia
Guess he doesn't want the grass to tittle his bum.

IT' STHEIR PRIMAL INSTINCT. THEY, IN THE WILD WOULD NORMALLY NEED TO TRAMPLE DOWN THE GRASSES TO GET A CLEAR AREA TO DO THEIR BUSINESS.
