Are there Muslims who think its haram to celebrate birthdays? Whats the justification behind this?

da man, that seems very pessimistic. so what if life is getting shorter? that would give me more reason to celebrate life...to have been blessed to be able to live another year, when the chances of being alive go down year to year.
I dont see it as a waste of money..a birthday is only once a year and its not like im thorwing parties everyday.

Getting closer to the day you die is not necessarily a bad thing..I would personally love to meet my Creator.

I wonder the same thing! I dont see anything wrong with celebrating the day that allah swt put u into this life to serve him!
however, i also dont see anything wrong with eating a "thanksgiving" dinner...because it is all in the intention u have. my intention? to get me a piece of halal turkey! and nothing else =D

The evidence in the Qur’aan and Sunnah indicates that celebrating birthdays or thanksgiving is a kind of bid’ah or innovation in religion, which has no basis in the pure sharee’ah. It is not permitted to accept invitations to birthdays or any other kind of celebration, because this involves supporting and encouraging bid’ah. Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Or have they partners with Allaah (false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allaah has not allowed…?” [al-Shoora 42:21]

“Then We have put you (O Muhammad) on a plain way of (Our) commandment. So follow that, and follow not the desires of those who know not. Verily, they can avail you
nothing against Allaah (if He wants to punish you). Verily, the zaalimoon (wrongdoers) are awliyaa’ (protectors, helpers, etc.) to one another, but Allaah is the Wali (Protector, Helper) of the muttaqoon (pious).” [al-Jaathiyah 45:18-19]

“Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord, and follow not any awliyaa’ (protectors, helpers, etc.) besides Him. Little do you remember!” [al-A’raaf 7:3]

According to saheeh reports, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever does something that is a not part of this matter of ours (i.e., Islam) will have it rejected” (reported by Muslim in his Saheeh); and “The best of speech is the Book of Allaah and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The most evil of things are those which have been newly invented (in religion), and every innovation is a going astray.” There are many other ahaadeeth that convey the same meaning.

Besides being bid’ah and having no basis in sharee’ah, these birthday celebrations and all other types of celebrations also involve imitation of the Jews and Christians in their celebrations. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be
upon him) said, warning us against following their ways and traditions: “You would follow the ways of those who came before you step by step, to such an extent that if they were to enter a lizard’s hole, you would enter it too.” They said, “O
Messenger of Allaah, (do you mean) the Jews and Christians?” He said, “Who else?”
(Reported by al-Bukhaari and Muslim).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them."

Hope this helps...

Edit...
I just wanted to say one more thing that have you ever seen christians celebrating any of our holidays like eid. We don't even get those days off, like they do on their holidays. Some can't even go to Eid prayer. Anyway, no offense but the truth is proven that we are not suppose to imitate them, as it is written in the Quran and the Sunnah.

If you ever read about Islam you would know it is haraam to celebrate anything other then Allah(SWT) even the Prophet Mohammads(SAW) birthday.. But then again you follow a weak religion based on lies and hate.... SHiias celebrate things which never were celebrated in ISlam.
Birthdays originated with the pagans for those who do not know........ By being imitating others you become one of them...I am a MUSLIM.. I celebrate Eids.. For all of you others who want to be ignorant why don't you convert to some other religion so you can celebrate the petty things you want. A for your own sake learn your deen....

Again 412envy look up Abdullah Bin Saba.....

Birthday celebrations are done by non Muslims and have no basis in Islam. There is no reason to celebrate your birthday. In fact the whole concept of celebrating your birthday comes from Christians. In Islam it is haraam to celebrate any holiday that was made or praticed by non Muslims and Pagans. This is why Muslims only have 2 holdiays which are Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha. Now attending a XMAS or Thanksgiving celebration is ok if you are only going to see your family but doing any type of actual celebration or religous gathering is haraam.

What!! We do not celebrate the Prophet Mohammed's(saw) birthday because he said he should not be idolized.
Here in the Middle East those who I know follow Islam would never celebrate any ones birthday because it is not Sunnah!!!!

I know the Shiia celebrate birthdays and mark the days of someones death by mourning but this is not the Practice of Prophet Mohammed(saw)...

And like someone else said it originated with pagan origins if you do not believe it then look it up...also birthday cakes first came about as away to predict the future like soothsaying.. they hid coins in the cake and whatever coins or thing you found in the cake would tell your future..

And if you say it is culture Islam is a complete religion and it is culture..... Islam tells us how to behave in our everyday lives.....

Anyway, the point is it is haraam to celebrate someones birthday...it is not an Islamic concept.

here is a link on the fatwa issued...
http://www.islamweb.net/ver2/Fatwa/ShowFatwa.php?lang=E&Id=84957&Option=FatwaId

and those who try to bring innovation into Islam we should condemn...so said Prophet Mohammed(saw)..

I don't think it's haram, I just think there is no true significance in Islam regarding birthdays. My husband's mother doesn't even know when her TRUE birthday is (poor documentation at that time in Morocco). Basically, it's just another day to them. It was hard for me to adjust to that at first, but now that I am back in the US I see the celebrations as a waste of time and money, with no true meaning. The few holidays that Muslims do celebrate are rich in religious meaning.

I have heard both on celebrating birthdays. I dont because its not an accomplishment. The prophets birthday is haram to celebrate because his birthday is also the day he died. Thats why.

Allah sends down His blessings on the Prophet (Muhammad) and His angels pray for him. O ye who believe, you too should invoke His blessings on him and salute him with the salutation of peace.

it is an innovation to our religion; the prophet and his companinons never celebrated birthdays; besides, why would you celebrate a year closer to death?

Celebrating anything other than the two Islamic Eids is haram.

It's even forbidden to celebrate the prophet's birthday.

Now ask yourself why you do it? just because others do it .. It's all about blind imitation .. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, warning us against following the ways and traditions of non muslims: “You would follow the ways of those who came before you step by step, to such an extent that if they were to enter a lizard’s hole, you would enter it too.” They said, “O Messenger of Allaah, (do you mean) the Jews and Christians?” He said, “Who else?” (Reported by al-Bukhaari and Muslim). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”

It's not forbidden.
Those who say it's forbidden think it's like Muslim people are imitating the Western people... well, so what? It's nothing bad! Don't Muslims celebrate the birth day the prophet?
Let those kids enjoy the moment without all the hassle!
