THE sensation is part of the body's fight-or-flight response to anxiety or danger.

When you're under pressure, blood is quickly diverted from the stomach to your muscles, so you're left with a fluttering feeling in your tummy.

Butterflies in the stomach is a medical condition characterized by the physical sensation of a "fluttery" or "tickling" (hence butterflies) feeling in the stomach. Some believe that this is caused by the release of epinephrine, or adrenaline, when one is nervous, pulling blood away from the stomach and sending it to the muscles. This in turn causes the stomach to temporarily shut down, possibly the reason for loss of appetite when one is "love sick". Butterflies in the stomach is most often experienced prior to important events, when stress is induced, but can be experienced in situations of impending danger.

There is a medical explanation for butterflies in the stomach. When nervous or afraid, the body produces chemicals, one of which is adrenaline. The presence of this causes your solar plexus to tighten, (that's in your abdomen) and causes nausea, stomach pain etc. In severe cases vomiting is also a symptom.

Activation of the "fight or flight response" to stress. The reason you feel uneasy in your stomach when you are about to do something stressful is because your brain tells your liver to secrete hormones like adrenaline which make you more alert and ready for action.
