They were enslaved in Egypt. Then the Pharaoh allowed them to go free, then the Pharaoh changed his mind and went after his former slaves. So the Jews were fleeing from the Egyptians. The thing is when you read how this is written it implies that the Jews took up arms while fleeing Egypt. Chances are they stole food, supplies and weapons as they were leaving Egypt. This would have made the Pharaoh very upset and cause him to chase after the Jews. So when they came up to the Red Sea God parted it for them. Some scholars are now saying that it was not the Red Sea, but another body of water, that has long since dried up. It is called the Reed Sea and in the translation it could be either Red or Reed. The thing is the Reed Sea falls into a geographic location of where the Jews were during this time. This was looked at using how fast and far a group of that many people could travel back then in the amount of time it says in the bible. We are unable to send in archaeologists into that area due to the fact that it's location is in Egypt. The Egyptian government does not want or allow any Christian or Jewish archeology to go on. This is due in part because the main religion in Egypt now is Islam. If the area of the Reed Sea could ever be excavated it would be great, just to see if any evidence could be found. The History Channel has done a really good program on this if you ever see it on watch it, it's kinda cool.

Because of the king and his harsh demands the Israelites sought freedom from oppression, depression and suppression. Today we seek freedom from the same thing as the Israelites did. Only it cmes in addictions, peer presher, and other economic demands. But just like God came through for the Israelites, He'll come through for us. Just like He made a way out of no way for them...He'll make a way out of no way for us.

Exodus 1:11 -- Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pithom and Raamses.

Exodus 3:7 -- And the Lord said: "I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.
