An indirect quotation is either a paraphrase of an original quote, or is presented without the use of quotation marks, as in the following examples:

Indirect quote: Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that five minutes of today are worth as much as five minutes in the next millennium.

Direct quote: Ralph Waldo Emerson summed it up this way: "Five minutes of today are worth as much to me, as five minutes in the next millennium."

Indirect quote (paraphrase): The people of ancient Troy were warned to beware the Greeks bearing gifts.

Direct quote: In the Aeneid, the Roman poet Virgil wrote: "Do not trust the horse, Trojans! Whatever it is, I fear the Greeks, even though they bring gifts."

A direct quote is just that: the exact words spoken or written by the individual to whom they are attributed. The words are enclosed in quotation marks, which are omitted in indirect quotes.

I hope this is helpful.
