It's a garnish and stir stick and compliments the celery salt that is in the drink.

They use it for a stir stick and a garnish of course and it usually gets served for breakfast or brunch as a hangover remedy or a nice compliment to brunch.

The Original Bloody Mary

Ingredients
1.5 oz vodka
3 oz tomato juice
0.5 oz lemon juice
7 drops Worcestershire sauce
3 drops Tabasco sauce
freshly ground pepper
1 dash celery salt, freshly grated

Serving Instructions
Combine ingredients in glass filled with ice. Stir gently. Serve the Bloody Mary in a pint glass. Garnish with slice of celery, pickled asparagus.

Celery goes good with the tomato juice in a Bloody Mary. Onion, bell pepper,steamed shrimp would be good too, but a celery stalk is convenient and easy as a swizzle stick.

1) For decoration since the glass is usually rim salted with celery salt.
2) Some Bloody Mary's are usually spicy and celery is great to eat to cut through the spice.

It's a garnish like an olive for a martini only now more people are putting in things like pickled asparagus,pickled hot peppers and dill pickles.
