Unplug from the computer and tv all the time
Get involved in an after-school sport/activity, or begin a fun workout routine
Lose all the junky snacks and emotional connections to them. Take a homemade lunch to school, avoid soda's and fruit juices (or drink diluted fruit juice), snack on fruits/yogurt/veggies/whole grains, drink plenty of water (buy a Nalgene bottle) , eat a homemade dinner at home and sit down while you're eating.... turn off the tv and cell phones.
Pick up a book about nutrition and begin to really understand how we need to take care of our bodies and how intricate the living system really is.
Focus on special skills/strenghts/unique interests and harbor good self-esteem. This helps prevent those terrible self-depreciating cycles that young kids go through where they often turn to unhealthy food for comfort.

Obese kids--say more than 20 lbs. overweight simply need to get outside--walk, run, climb trees, lift weights, put in a garden--any kind of activity will help dramatically. On the diet side, just avoid soda, candy, chips and go easy on the fried foods.
Chubby kids--less than 20 lbs. overweight need to get outside, too. Run, walk the dog, play frisbee with the dog, or frisbee golf. On the diet side, it's never good to eat lots of empty calories, but your calorie per day ratio is okay, because when you hit your growing streak, you won't be fat anymore. You'll be slender, maybe even skinny.

Eat lean meat, veggies, fruits.
Limit soda, fruit juices, processed junk food, a lot of sugar.
Exercise everyday (even a 30 minute walk is better then nothing). It's okay to have the cake/cookies on occasion just not everyday and one serving.
There is no magic pill and/or solution. It has to be attempted as better eating and not looked at as a "DIET" which can send kids into the unheathly mindset of lifelong dieting.
