You need to pick a field to explore. Geography is very understated, and useful for an explorer. Most modern explorers are scientists, and know what they're looking for.

Yes, mostly under-water, but being a surveyor is very fun and George Washington spent his youth being one. I am not so sure how you can be an explorer in this time because almost all of earth has been satillited and Google Earth mapped out every bit of land.
