Yes, it's perfectly legal. The engine already meets smog standards.

Shouldnt be a prob, peeps swap jdm motors into there cars all the time. You only get the engine, not the emissions stuff like cat, muffler etc. As far as the registration goes im not really sure, you prob have to have some form of documentation for it, call the dmv.

No, its not legal to put an Sr20det (jdm) engine in ANY 240sx. It might pass smog levels, but the RWD Sr20det never came to the US. Even if you leave it stock.

S15 sr20 is just as easy fit as an S14 sr20.. but anything after that is a waste.. the 6speed is not worth the hassle.. it is weaker than 5-speed, and your speed sensor for the 6 speed is not on the trans.. it is in the differential.. so then you would need the s15 diff and associated wiring.. etc.. stick with S14 sr20.. it is just as good power wise.. only better thing about S15 sr20 is the "dual-ball bearing turbo" instead of the single ball bearing/with a bushed other side turbo... s15 turbo spools up a mili-second faster.... no biggie
