The Miniature Schnauzer
As such they tend to be excellent watchdogs. They are often guarded of strangers until the owners of the home welcome the guest, upon which they are typically very friendly to them. "Miniature Schnauzers are not by nature aggressive, as are some of their Terrier cousins. They should be relatively fearless. Once mature, the Schnauzer has a strongly developed territorial instinct. He is an ideal guard dog as he defends vocally rather than physically. ... A good Schnauzer will bark at anyone who may appear a threat to his home....... Schnauzers are not random, incessant barkers. They are discriminating and intelligent guard dogs that assume this duty naturally. They are highly playful dogs, and if not given the outlet required for their energy they can become bored and invent their own "fun".

Without a doubt...the Border Collie...I have 2...smart as whips..learn fast, great memory and working dogs to boot. Mine compete in Agility and the younger one may compete in sheep herding one day.
I also really like...in no particular order...
Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Standard Schnauzers, Shih Tzus, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Papillons.
BUT BORDER COLLIES RULE!

I love Cane Corsos ( Italian Mastiff ) they are rare and very beautiful dogs. My girl is so sweet and gentle and has a noble way about her. Also, they are extremely intelligent and versitile working dogs. They are still used in Italy to catch wild boar and herd and guard livestock and homes. They are not nearly as dog aggressive as a pitbull and are weary of strangers but welcome anyone that thier owner welcomes with a wriggling tail and body.
