My cat of 11 years was diagnosed with a stomach tumor and was put to sleep today. How pathetic is it that I have been crying all day over it?

You have every right to be sad, your cat was a companion of yours for 11 years.
Your cat went to play in the grass and flowers while they are waiting for you to join them!!!

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Not pathetic, just human. I know just what your feeling because I had to put mine of 15-16 yrs to sleep this past Wednesday, 21st. Only I didn't know what was wrong or could it be fixed. But turns out she was hours away from death. She grew up with my now 18 yr old daughter & was her cat. I not only felt horrible for the loss but felt worried over my daughter who took it hard. She made the decision to put her to sleep, her 1st great loss. Talking about it with those who care & understand really helps. Cry, scream, have a drink or 2, but keep telling yourself you gave her/him a wonderful life and did the ultimate act of love...letting them go before the suffering. Time does make it bearable, you will eventually only cry when you think about them or are reminded of them. My heart is with your's...hang in there!

I am very sorry to hear about your loss of your cat today. Crying and showing emotion is not in any way pathetic.... Our pets are family members after all. I know how hard it is to make the decision to have to put your kitty to sleep, but always remember that you made a choice that will spare your pet from pain and quality of life that would not be the same when our pets are healthy. Please take care, my thoughts are with you.

Do not think that your grief is pathetic. You have lived with and loved and been loved by a creature for 11 years!! Of course you will feel loss and sadness and intense pain. Allow yourself the opportunity to cry and grieve and remember the wonderful moments and life you have had together. You have actually lost a member of your family!!

I found that going to this site did help me in my grieving process

and especially reading this about the rainbow bridge which still fills my eyes with tears but my heart with love when I read it

It is NOT pathetic! We go through a lot of emotions when someone who is close to us dies. And out pets are many times closer to us than some humans - after all, they give us unconditional love. It is normal to feel what you are feeling. It won't go away overnight, but does get easier with time. Keep in mind that your cat is no longer feeling pain. The sadness we feel is usually for ourselves because we will miss them.

I am so very sorry.

It is not pathetic. It is expected when one owns a companion animal.

Don't make fun of yourself or make light of your grief. you have every reason to cry. We all love things that leave... pets, kids (even x's).

So have a good cry. I suggest writing about your cat. Your experience with your cat. There is so much joy within those years, things, I find, I never really appreciated until I sit down to pen them when losing my cat or dog.

If you are a person of prayer, say a special prayer for your cat... and yourself.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss. ..

You're not the only one to do that. When I lost Fred in September to a heart problem I cried, the vet cried, and two technicians cried when he was euthenized (it was incureable).

When I lost my first cat to cancer he was just short of 20 years old (two more months would have made him 20) and it took me three days to stop crying.

When our 18 year old Siamese died of renal failure both me and my sig. other called in sick to work, saying there was a death in the family -- there WAS. We didn't specify who.

If you care, there's nothing embarrasing about it. Nothing pathetic either. Love is love, regardless of the species it's given to.
