Most of the time, they just need food. I have had dogs and cats and most have lived a long, healthy life. However, I did adopt a 10 year old cat about 6 years ago. She has numerous health issues and I estimate I have been to the vets with her about 50 times so far. Couple that with the cost of medications, special foods, etc. and I have probably spent about 7,000 so far. But it is worth it. I do without things so she is well taken care of.

Ours are older..... they've got higher vet care costs.

One is on thyroid meds, that's $35 a month.

One is on kidney medication and pepcid occasionally if he's got a touchy stomach - cheap at $10 a bottle, but the vet insists on doing a blood panel on him twice a year as he's 16 and has a lump on his liver the size of a chicken egg.

One is diabetic, you need to buy the Lantus insulin in a package of 5 vials, they don't break them up, that costs $169 for the box but will last most of the year.

One has had digestive problems this year--it's $650 so far. She's still being checked on it, so I expect that cost to go up.
