I am going to NYC for a day trip December 8. I am curious as to what are some really neat things to do while there that is relatively low cost. I have been to the empire state building, wax museum. I have been to times square and will probably go again.
This time I want to go to central park, museum of sex, Museum of art and/or museum of natural history.
What else is good to do midtown?
Is Chinatown worth going to? What part for shopping?
ABSOLUTELY NO BROADWAY SHOWS!

Madison Square Garden is where the train station is. Around there is the NYC Library (Free) very cool, Rockefeller Center, St Paul's Cathedral, Time Square all within walking distance. Chinatown is also cool.

Canal St. in Chinatown; totally worth it.

Admission to the Brookly Museum of Art is free on the first Saturday of every month from 5-1pm

and the Studio Museum in Harlem is free on the first Saturday of the month from 10a-6p

the Holland Tunnel Art GAllery is the size of a toolshed! (it used to just be a shed:) but attracts quite a crownd to its shows......Free Saturdays 1-5p
61 s. 3rd st.

hmm the 8th is the 2nd saturday of the month so that's not really helpful but maybe for next time :)

the staten island ferry is a free ferry ride around lower manhattan and the statue of liberty
meets at teh corner of whitehall and south streets

saturdays at 8:30 am a tour leaves from 891 amsterdam ave. (between 103rd adn 104th streets)......the tour lasts 22 miles! but you can quit whenever you want....including after the part where you go on the staten island ferry! or in little italy or chinatown.

are you ruling out Broadway shows b/c you don't like them or b/c of the cost? there are ways to do it for free :)

I would also recommend going to Macy's and strolling down 5th Avenue to see all of the windows decorated for the holidays. Since you are only there for the day, I would stay more towards midtown rather than Chinatown.
