Here are the differences between the two models.
PLAYSTATION 3 60GB:

Four USB ports
Memory card reader ports
Ethernet cable included
Able to play certain PlayStation 2 titles
Able to play Super Audio CDs

PLAYSTATION 3 40GB:

Two USB ports
No memory card reader ports
Cable no longer provided
Unable to play PlayStation 2 titles
Unable to play Super Audio CDs

There is no affect on gameplay or anything else.

The 40GB console has no backward compatibility so you cannot play PS2 or PS1 games. There are no memory card readers so no compact flash, SD or memory stick duo can be read. However you can buy those memory card readers that plug into a USB if you want them. The 40GB only has 2 usb slots however compared to the standard four on the 60GB PS2. There is also a lower memory. There are no other differences. But, if you do get the 60GB, Sony have decided not to make the 60GB in the UK anymore so no more parts for that console will be available meaning, if your console breaks down, you won't be able to repair it.

hey mate the difference between both the 40gb and 60gb is that the 40gb has only 2 usb ports and cannot play ps2 games. whereas the 60gb has got 4 usb ports, it can play ps2 games and has a multi memory card reader.

no all ps3 consoles have the same game play and the same games. the answer to your question would be, buy the 60gb if you want to play your old ps2 games or buy the 40gb if you dont want to play ps2 games as you will save a bit of money.

i didnt have a ps2 and im not interested in playing old games so im going to buy the 40gb ps3. good luck with your new ps3

ps. buy some quality games including Ratchet and Clank, Call of Duty 4, Uncharted, Assassins Creed, Ninja Gaiden, Haze and Unreal Tournament are coming out in december.

The 40GB doesn't have backward compatibility, so it can't play PS2 or PS1 games. It also doesn't have the memory card readers. If you want to transfer pictures or music from a memory card to your PS3's HDD (hard drive) you won't be able to do that either. Those are the only differences.

To above: The 60GB model doesn't come with Motorstorm. That's the 80GB model.

You can still play online but there are some games that are coming out and that have already dropped that u will need enhanced memory to run and 40 gigs is pretty small. Go for the 80 gig. It will be worth it

1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB versio, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.

Pretty much what they said. If you don't care about playing PS1 or PS2 games, go with the 40 GB. As for music and whatnot, that's what my computer is for, I don't need that on my PS3.
