There are two good options...the first one is to put tin foil around the base of the tree. The second one is to take orange slices and hang them around the perimeter of the tree (which may need to be replaced every two days or so). Cat's don't like tin foil and they don't like citrus!
Good luck!

we have the same exact problem. the only way we have found that works is to not put ornaments on the bottom two feet of the tree. hopefully your cats dont climb the tree... our cats decided to do that one year and knocked the whole thing over breaking all the ornaments!
or you could put your tree in a room that you can shut the door to?
another thing that works is a spray bottle, but you have to constantly be watching them and its not much of a help when your not home until they get completeley trained, and sometimes that takes a really long time (it never even worked for our cats)

No one will agree with this, but it's what we did! We did away with the tree! Now, we don't have ornaments to get out and put on, take off, mess to clean up, etc. Makes for a Much Merrier Christmas, especially for MOM, who had to do all of that! I can just imagine the reactions from our readers! Sorry....................

Sit near the tree with a squirt bottle. Everytime they come near the tree squirt them. (Make sure to cover anything under the tree with a plastic bag so they don't get wet. Or, you could try aluminum foil laid out under the tree. They are supposed to hate walking on it. Just a few ideas, good luck! Also, make sure to hang non-breakable ornaments on the bottom. DO NOT LET THEM EAT THE TINSLE! It can be fatal if they eat it.

You can't! So the best thing to do is prepare for it in your mind, Expect the worse, But see it as entertaining rather than a chore. Once you've picked the tree up four or five times, had to redecorate it six or seven times and had to buy new decorations three or four times, it'll just become a habit.
And always keep in mind the pleasure they give you for the rest of the year and what cute little characters they've got!

The spray bottle idea is good, you can also get a spray that smells particularly bad to cats and dogs (we used to use one call 'No!') and spray it around the tree. You can also put aluminum foil under the tree (cats don't like the feel of it under their feet).

they're attracted to the mint so it's like catnip, which they go crazy for. you could buy them some catnip so they have the mint and might leave your tree alone. buy them other toys too and play with them to keep them distracted, although i doubt it'll work. but if it's really bad, just use a spray bottle or give them a little slap when they're on the tree so they'll stay away next time

Keep them in a separate room from the tree. Cats will do what they want.

i use ornaments that wont break(plastic) because we can't keep him away from it
ours climbs the inside then pokes his head out near the top so i guess you could milk the photo opportunities
and don't use icing/angel hair on bottom they try to eat it

my cats hate the smell of orages. if you leave a plate with oranges at the base of the tree they will usually avoid it. that or keep a spray bottle with water on hand...
