The New Testament was written in Greek, and the name "Jesus" means the same in Greek as the Hebrew name "Joshua." "Joshua" means literally God is salvation. So the angel's message to Joseph in Matthew 1 was "You shall call His name 'God is salvation,' for He will save His people from their sins."

It is derived from the Hebrew name Yeshua, which was itself derived from Yehoshu'a, It means roughly 'Yahweh is salvation', with Yahweh being the personal name which ancient Jews used for God. Jesus came about as an EXTREMELY rough transliteration of the Greek name which was later ascribed to said religious leader.

Additionally, the name Joshua is also derived from Yeshua. J is a very common replacement for the Y sound when translating Yiddish or ancient Hebrew into other languages. For example, the name 'Jehovah' is also a very rough (tansliteration of Yahweh.

It is also a common misconception that Jesus means 'God is with us'.....the name that actually does mean 'God is with us' is Emmanuel, which is what one of God's angels told Jesus' mother would be a title that was given to her son later.

But anyway, the shortest anser is that the name Jesus roughly means 'God is salvation'. ;)

What Does Jesus Mean

It is the most proper to call Him Yeshua, since only in the Hebrew does His name have any meaning. In Hebrew Yeshua means both "Salvation," and the concatenated form of Yahoshua, the "L-RD who is Salvation." The name Jesus has no intrinsic meaning in English, except as it is known as His name in English. (Therefore, we cannot deny the name Jesus, since this name commonly identifies the Messiah to English speaking people.)

Christ (Christos) is Greek, Jesus is Hebrew. Jesus means true saviour, Christ means annointed: the one who has and gives the Chrism (the Father's Spirit).

Jesus from the new testament is just a copy of Jacob from the old testament.
I don't know if Jesus has a meaning but I know that Christ means "the chosen one"

It is Hebrew for "God saves." Jesus actually made up the name for himself when he began his ministry, so it doesn't mean anything.
