Of course we can decided on a religion before learning about other religions; the real question is 'should' we decide on a religion before all other possibilities are looked into...
Personally, I think that religion is more of a journey than a name (I think I got that from Hinduism)- as long as you are free to convert at any time, remaining open minded to other beliefs, then I don't see a problem with choosing one faith while ignorant of another. It's not exactly possible to learn about every other religion in existence anyway.
And it is worth pointing out that most catholic schools do require a world religions class for their students, so I'd guess that they also believe that it's important to understand other religions in order to embrace your own. Something like that.

Yes, absolutely.
Assuming there is a true religion, the other religions must be false or counterfeit!
How would you learn if a $100.00 bill was counterfeit. Do you need to study every counterfeit bill to be able to discern the true bill?
NO! You learn what the real bill is like, and then you can discern when the counterfeit bills don't match up.
The same goes for religion, study the true religion, and you can then discern when the others don't stack up!

Now that's a profound question, well done.
I think exploring your beliefs by exposing yourself to many religious is a beautiful thing, I have the utmost respect for people taking a good look at many religious to decide for themselves what they want.
Personally, I'm Atheist/Agnostic, but I think Buddhism might be a second choice.

All religions have something to offer. And, each must find his own. I grew up in a Christian family. I became, and always will be, a Jew. There is much in Islam that inspires me. And, the ways of the Buddha has much to offer anyone.......it is a philosophical thinking that can enhance any religion.

I think that people have a hard time deciding what to wear everyday so studing so many cults and religions in the world would drive them mad, besides it would take years.

true religion is one's own connection with spirituality.
it sounds like you are talking more about a general framework. So yes, it is fine to choose a framework that works for you, but I would also note that sometimes we outgrow certain reference points as well.

I don't know. I studied many different religions, as well as atheism, before settling on my current religious views.
