Some are not the most helpful of answers so here goes
When you send all the paperwok off for the number to be allocated to your vehicle you leave your tax disc and your original number on the car. You will recieve notification when your will be allowed to put the new number on and you will get a letter of authority to go and buy new number plates. In the same letter will be a replacement tax disc with the new number and a pre-addressed envelope to send your old tax disc back which you must do
New number plates fitted. New tax in the window and all happy. Your registration docs V5 will come in the post a while later
One thing worthe remembering photo copy ALL the docs and forms you send in and keep them until everything including the V5 is back. DVLA have been known to loose a few things and then deny all knowledge
Hope you are a happy bunny now
and
You enjoy your personal reg number

The DVLA will issue you with a replacement tax disc, showing the new number. You cannot use the new number on your car until you receive this disc. It should be accompanied by a certificate of authorisation to use the new number, which will be required to get new number plates made up.
You should then return your old disc to the DVLA.
This will be stated on the letter that accompanies the new disc and the certificate of authorisation.
Your new registration document will be sent later, but will probably arrive within two weeks of the certificate of authorisation and replacement tax disc.
Remember to inform your insurance company and (if relevant) finance company of the change of registration.

When you go through the transfer process with the DVLA (the bit that costs £80) they tell you when you can fit the plate to your car and send you a replacement tax disc and MoT certificate with the new (personalised) plate on them.

Best and quickest thing to do is go to your nearest DVLA office with the old disc and paperwork. They will issue a new disc and will send the registration form away to be changed. They will also note on the MOT the change and stamp it for you.
Make sure you tell your insurance company and remember the DVLA take up to 48 hours to update insurance details on there computers, so you may end up being tugged by the police during this period.

It's not just the tax disc (Vehicle Excise Licence in Government-speak), it's the MoT if you have one and the insurance as well. The DVLA has it all worked out, and it'll cost you.

I work in the dvla but I work in the drivers side of things. Give them a call on 0870 240 0010 and they should be able to help you out. Sorry I can't help any more.

You will have to fill in a form from the DVLA to register it to your car, send off your MOT cert which they will alter and they will send you a new tax disc (think you then have to return the old one)
