Obviously it's not illegal, but I am aware Americans might have some cultural hang-ups about near nudity, especially with males.

Tmarie...that's quite telling about Americans and weight....I don't have any floppiness....lol...I am quite slim and fit....

Oto, how is this sick. In Berlin, we have whole families who go nude at parks...I am not trying to say Germans are somehow better, but I am curious about just how polite or impolite this particular behaviour would be construed in the.U.S.

skinnybe, it would NOT BE indecent exposure. This much I am certain of. I have called law enforcement already to make sure, and they said it would be legal, but told me folks might not appreciate it necessarily.

Rhonda..."not as socially accepted" would be a correlative a cultural hang-up....

I somehow sense from some of the answers that you think that there would be some kind of sexual motive behind it. There is absolutely none. In Europe, also in Australia, I simply wear a thong at the beach, or go nude....Nothing sexual at all....However, I WILL have respect and wear at least a speedo I suppose. I do not wish to be offensive...This is why I asked the question.....

Rhonda, you are quite fast with the keyboard. Read what I wrote above please. Did I not write I would wear at least a speedo based on the answers given? Please read before you type....

First, make sure this is actually LEGAL at the particular beach you have in mind. Second, be aware that unless you are in a very cosmopolitian area, like South Miami Beach, any male wearing a thong in public will be presumed to be homosexual. As you probably know, homosexual males are sometimes the target of irrational violence here, even to the point of homophobic persons following someone from the beach or taking someone's auto tag number to seek out and harm a person they perceive as gay.

But strictly from the etiquette standpoint, it would depend on whether these were children of people with whom you are going to the beach (or meeting at the beach) or if the parents and children are strangers to you. In the case of strangers, dress as you please so long as it's legal. In the case of acquaintances, a bare-butt suit may or may not be an issue. Whether you want to "play it safe" and cover your cheeks -- or take a chance of offending them and dare to bare -- that choice is up to you.

BTW, I'm with you -- requiring clothing at the seaside is crazy. All that yucky sand stuck in your swim suit and then being stuck wearing the wet clammy thing for lack of place to change. Americans are crazy in some ways.

It really says something about how self conscience we are as Americans. It isn't illegal to wear a thong to the beach but it has been deemed socially inappropriate to show that much skin in public especially around children. I think that most of us are just not as comfortable with our bodies as you seem to be. Just a bit of information for you though....the only men (in America) who wear thongs are generally male strippers and no matter how good they might look in them...they don't wear them outside the strip clubs. (At least not that I've noticed)

Dude - it's a question of aesthetics. No one, not even Jason Lewis, former Calvin Klein model, looks good in a thong or speedo.

I think it's quite inappropriate, and unattractive, no matter how fit or trim someone is.. it strikes me as a pathetic cry for attention.

ask your mum if she would appreciate a man in a thong while she was at the beach with you and your siblings when you were a child. and i agree with the rest. you just don't like what you hear from us so ask mummy.

Kids can be cruel. And they have a sense of humour which is not 'politically correct'. If you want to get laughed at a lot, go ahead.

How do you know if there will be kids at the beach you choose to go to?
Wear what's comfortable and don't worry about the other people there.
