Our family has decided we have gotten to the point that a dog would be great. Yahoo used to have a dog breed recommender, I can't find it anymore. I keep doing searcheds on the net for another breed recommender, but none of the links seem to work. Anyone know of a dog breed recommender that actually works? We haven't decided if we want a big dog/little dog; short hair/long hair (probably short hair now that I type that...) we have cats and a 2 1/2 year old...I know the recomendation is waiting until the youngest is 3 (almost there.) I want time to research the breed and make an informed decision. Any help/ideas would be appreciated...

I plan on getting our dog from a pound (kill shelter) but want a breed recommender so that we know where to even start. I have a 2 year old and cats, I would have my sons with me to find the right match, but can't decide if we want a big dog, little dog etc. There are so many breeds to look at, just need a starting point to look. We have looked at shelters and if it were up to me, we would take them ALL home. But have to be realistic. We have a fenced in yard and own our house, I feel a perfect environment for a dog. I was raised around animals (my god mother was a wild life rehaber) and we love animals too...just need a starting point I guess. Thanks again for any suggestions.

This is a good resource. Just remember they are not responsible for the animal you buy from any of there resources.
Not only research the kind of breed you want, but do extensive research on the breeder.
Some years ago I found out this the hard way and got a dog with seizures, she did not live long and the breeder did not care what she was breeding I found out after talking to her. That dog had papers up the butt and was supposed to be show quality....
Research, research, research!

Those things NEVER work... go to the AKC site (www.akc.org) and look at the various breeds... each of y'all select a few that you seem to like and list them... find the common ones then go to the breed sites listed on the AKC site -- there will be a description of the dogs and what they were bred for -- there will also be a link to the parent club of each of the breeds and you can go there and read up more on the various breeds -- you can then contact the breeder referal person from these breeds and see if you can locate someone in your area that knows about the breeds to help teach you about them or where you can meet representatives of the breeds. You can find if there is going to be a dog show and/or trial in your area and go meet several representatives at the show/trials. Talk to a lot of people - do a lot of research - learn a whole lot about the breeds and what their health, temperament and structure should be like and see if the mentors/breeders think these are suitable breeds for you. The mentors/breeders can help you locate a nice litter if you are suitable and you can learn more and decide what you might want to do with the dog - obedience, rally, agility, hunting, whatever... It is great that you are being responsible and learning about the dogs you might want before you get one -- most people just impulse buy and then end up with a problem on their hands that the shelters have to deal with later... Any help I can give please don't hesitate to contact...
add: There is no such thing as 'akc certified breeders' -- a big red flag is if a breeder offers puppies on the internet and second if they say something like 'member of the AKC' -- the AKC doesn't have memberships - they register dogs and all that means is the lineage of the dog has supposedly been maintained in paperwork - it in no way evidences a responsible breeder -- people breeding dogs registered with other fly by night registries, like ConKC etc., are not on face responsible but just because a person has AKC registered dogs doesn't mean they know or care what they are doing.

Well I don't know of any better advisers than the people here, so here is my opinion. One good set of candidates would be the terriers around children, also the herding breeds are good with kids!! I would say that breed is not that important. Go with personality. Go to your local shelter and see first-hand what works for you and your kid!! Good luck on your search and take your time, it is a long time commitment!!
