I was looking to buy a PS3 and noticed a Cooling Fan that "prevents potentially dangerous overheating of your console", really thought, how serious is this problem? and why can't it just cool itself with its own internal fan?

Its the same for all the next gen consoles. I think as long as the console gets sufficent ventilation then there shouldn't be a problem. You don't need these add on cooling systems at all!

hey mate, well the xbox 360 has had quite alot of overheating and the red ring of death problems, since it came out. which is why companies started an idea of selling an external fan to customers who were scared that their 360 was going to break. as a matter of fact the 1/3 of all 360s has a chance of overheating or dying on you (33%)

whereas if you compare that for the ps3 the chance of your ps3 dying is 0.2%, mate the ps3 does get warm but has the internal cooler to prevent any overheating. hundreds of thousands of ps3 have been running for 24 hours a day for months and months to help research for a university. that should help your decision.

compare the ps3 to the 360 right, the xbox cant even have its own battery inside the console because of heating problems, when you start up a 360 its like a loud noise, with the ps3 you'll hardly notice the inside fan is on because its so quiet as it doesnt need to work much, even the 360 battery has a small fan because it gets too hot. these external fans your talking about are mainly targeted for 360 users.

basically yeah, after you a buy a ps3 and if it has any heating problems, come find me yh and give me a slap lol.

THE cooling fans are just another companies way of marketing something based on fear You will notice Microsoft and Sony do not produce them. THe fans actually void warranties on the 360..

THe fact is the ps3 gets warm but it has the internal cooling necessary to prevent problems. The main fan rarely kicks on unless someone has their ps3 stuffed into an entertainment center. In fact 300,000 ps3s have been running 24 hours a day for over 6 months helping standford university with their folding@home project.

PS3 has a great cooling system. In fact, those intercoolers do more damage, than something good, they don't let the original internal cooling system work properly.

I have a PS3 and have no problems with overheating even though it is used alot. If you give it some space and don't let it COMPLETELY overheat to where you know something is wrong you should have no problem. The console does feel hot though sometimes.

the xbox 360 used to suffer lots of overheating problems when it was first launched even though it has its own internal fan. they are probably selling this to cover themselves if the same thing happens with the ps3.
