It's a proven fact that by just wearing contact lenses you drastically increase your change for an eye infection. And if you abuse your contacts (don't clean them properly, sleep in them, wear them for way longer than the replacement schedule) you're really asking for trouble. Haven't you heard about people recently going blind from acanthamoeba by not using their contact lens solutions properly?

however, most people wear contacts without a problem and most eye infections related to contact lens wear are easily treated without any problem.

There is an appreciable risk of minor problems.
And a very low but not zero risk of major problems.

A bit like driving a car, really. And similarly, it's those who don't pay attention, and think they can mis-behave, and don't need to follow the guidelines and rules, who put themselves at much greater risk...
Not cleaning lenses, sleeping in lenses not designed for it, avoiding check-ups and trying to buy lenses on-line without confirming the fit...

Most people, again like driving, find the benefit worth the risk.
(40,000 road deaths a year in the USA!)
Contact lenses, it seems, aren't as risky as cars.
But that isn't to say there aren't risks.

I've seen some badly damaged eyes in my time, from contact lens wear.

Contacts are dangerous only when not used properly

no, I sell them by the truckload some days!

What makes contacts dangerous are the people that wear them- should I say OVERwear them- which causes them to be prone to higher risks of eye infections, corneal abrasions....like I tell my customers- you can lie to me, but the Doctor will see it when you get in the chair to be checked again, whether it be to re-up or a theraputic visit.

it's only dangerous if you don't take care of them properly-
just remember to clean them with solution and replace them at the right time

Its the people who wear them and abuse them who make them dangerous.
