I never quite understood why a question like "Does God exist?" results in somebody getting a thumbs up or down if it truly pertains to the topic at hand. Is a theist's opinion any less valid than an atheist's? Or vice versa? Instead of voting a thumbs down based on your own opinion, why not judge answers based on the clarity in which the opinion is communicated and leave bias aside?

By the way, I have seen this on both sides, so I'm not picking on any one group here. It is just discouraging that so many people who claim to be open-minded demonstrate their narrow-mindedness by voting down another opinion because they happen to disagree with the point of view alone.

That's a good question! Some people just like to give downward digits because they disagree theologically with others.

On my part, sometimes the answers are so smart-alecky that they deserve a thumbs down, in my opinion, unless they are smart alecky AND very witty. Wittiness always gets thumbs up.

You're right though, why rate an opinion? I repent of any unnecessary thumbs down I have ever given, and will try share more joy in the future by giving thumbs up.

Some peoples opinions are just ignorant and deserve a thumbs down. EDIT: But I don't go up and down the list thumbing down everybody.

Why the fuss? Thumbs up or down has no material effect on score or standing. Seems to me it's there to allow people to indicate their agreement or otherwise with an answer.

I usually endeavour to thumbsup answers I agree with (which I ipso facto consider good ones), and leave the others alone. But an answer whose very basis I disagree with is obviously a bad one in my opinion, and if it's particularly ill-thought-out I'll thumbsdown it. So what?

You have an excellent point. I attempt to do what you suggest, although there are times when I'll thumbs-down an answer just so I don't have to look at 16 paragraphs of Bible verses (or other diatribe) anymore. I don't like to report - I'd rather just thumbs-down and not have to look at it anymore.

Theres a war going on here.

And the very subject that is meant to bring people together, actually turns into the opposite.

Even the atheists: who reject religion because it 'causes so much problems and war', take part in this ongoing war between who is right and wrong.

Its all a bunch of hoo ha if u ask me

Many people thumb down the long cut-and-paste answers so we don't have to see them again.

What is the purpose of thumbs up or thumbs down other than to show you disagree with the person's response. Otherwise, do away with it because it has no purpose.

would you prefer they answer the question with another 'yes' or 'no' when somebody else has already answer the question with a 'yes' or 'no'. that would be fun if the answers were longer cut and paste answers, wouldn't it?

Seriously. It's more because the Thumbs Up/Down concept is retarded to begin with, but still: what else am I supposed to do with it?
