He was speaking as man. What man in His right mind would want the sins of the world placed on Him.

Once again the freakish, bizarre Trinity dogma let's it's adherents down! Almost all the answers here are ridiculous, as they try to make the Trinity, which appears nowhere in the bible, correct.

Sad really.

Clearly Jesus is not God almighty, he even saying he has a God and that God is greater than he is. Of course the trinitarians insist 'the three are co-equal'

If that is the case, how can the silly, above statement "Father God is the boss, Jesus is God the Son and then there is God the Holy Spirit." be correct, they are all co-equal, so one can not be the boss.

The problem is, if you simply read the scriptures, you will see that there is one over Jesus. That's the one he was praying to, to allow the cup being taken away from him. He also said, "let not my will, but yours be done".

How could they be the same person if they have separate "wills". Trinity = Stupid.

Jesus was praying to 'his father and his God'

Jesus was a Mystic healer and clairvoyant and preached the Mystic message of LOVE. In verse 31 of the Thomas gospels found at nag hammadi Jesus said, "No prophet is welcome on his home turf; doctors don't cure those who know them" these are the words of a mortal man!! He was not declared a god until 325 years after his death. If we were made in the image of god would that not make god flesh and blood

Some day we may understand.

Other responders have given good reasons for His prayer, but let's also recall that He was under a great deal of stress, and that Mark 14:33 says that He was sorrowful and "sore amazed (KJV)". Some think He was afraid He was going to die in the garden--let the reader decide--but He was strengthened enough to go all the way to Calvary, because He loved us so. How can we comprehend that.

God is omnipotent, which means He "Is".

Christians believe Jesus to have been 100% Human and 100% God.

In effect, the human part of Jesus-the "faulty_ part that was to take on the sins of the world, was pleading with his "other half".

Jesus is God, but Jesus was also human.

To think that the All Knowing, God Almighty, He who does not sleep or tire, The Most Perfect Being came down as a man, got scared about the very thing He created: i.e death..and said what you mentioned...

is disturbing..

Because he knew that what He was about to do would hurt like crazy. Plus God was going to turn His back on Him

He also said but let your will be done

He was basically asking if there was another way because when he was on the Cross he took everyones punishment just imagine taking the punishment of the world....

lets just say it sucked and He was looking for another way instead.

The interesting part comes next, in my opinion. Angels came to comfort Him just as He'd comforted His cousin John before he was beheaded in prison.
