there is nothing after death
(Ecclesiastes 9:4-5) . . .. 5 For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten.
(Ecclesiastes 3:18-21) . . .I, even I, have said in my heart with regard to the sons of mankind that the [true] God is going to select them, that they may see that they themselves are beasts. 19 For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit, so that there is no superiority of the man over the beast, for everything is vanity. 20 All are going to one place. They have all come to be from the dust, and they are all returning to the dust. 21 Who is there knowing the spirit of the sons of mankind, whether it is ascending upward; and the spirit of the beast, whether it is descending downward to the earth.? . .

Death is the end of a person. Once he dies, his body parts, brain, heart etc stop working. The world continues in its pace but the person is no more aware of all these. He/She has come to an end.
Now this concept of end is too difficult for man to digest. Its really difficult when you think that one day you will end up and then not feel anything and not know anything. People need some kind of solution to get rid of this feeling that they will end one day. They cannot leave with this disturbing thought.
Whenever man was in trouble, he used his brain and all his knowledge resources to find some possible explanation. So our ancestors tried to believe in life after death. A few believed that they will rise from their graves. This faith can be seen in various different versions in different religions of the world. But the core idea remains the same. I think man created all these to make his life more comfortable and to avoid thinking about the disturbing idea that he will come to an end someday.

Well, in the first place, hell is not currently a real place. Also, we have neither a spirit nor a soul -- in the spiritual sense. We *are* a living soul -- we don't *have* one (Gen. 2:7; 1Cor. 15:45). The Bible formula for a living soul:
Dust of the Ground + Breath of Life = A Living Soul
We also don't *have* the spiritual concept of a "spirit." The word "ruÌach" translated in the Bible into the English word "spirit" (Eccl 12:7) is referring to the Breath of Life given to us by God.
H7307 (ר×Ö¼×) ruÌach (roo'-akh)
From H7306; wind; by resemblance breath, that is, a sensible (or even violent) exhalation;
H7306 (ר×Ö¼×) ruÌach (roo'-akh)
A primitive root; properly to blow, that is, breathe;
Without the Breath, we are just plain dead -- back to the Dust of the Ground (Gen. 3:19; Psalms 104:29). The Bible formula for death:
A Living Soul - Breath of Life = Dust of the Ground
Jesus does promise us an after-life, though. For more Bible information on this topic, see the following references.

In hinduism, soul travels faster than light. At death, all consciousness called KarmA, is churned out with breath from throughout body and carried with soul. That soul goes to the heavens if has good karmA, enjoys there and comes back to earth like other souls, takes the form acc. to their karmA (actions, desires,past exp., pending learning). Only when devoid of material consciousness, soul gets the 'Infinite Knowledge/Omniscience' after death and attains salvation (no birth/death cycle).

"The doctrine of man's consciousness in death, especially the belief that spirits of the dead return to minister to the living, has prepared the way for modern spiritualism. If the dead are admitted to the presence of God and holy angels, and privileged with knowledge far exceeding what they before possessed, why should they not return to the earth to enlighten and instruct the living? If, as taught by popular theologians, spirits of the dead are hovering about their friends on earth, why should they not be permitted to communicate with them, to warn them against evil, or to comfort them in sorrow? How can those who believe in man's consciousness in death reject what comes to them as divine light communicated by glorified spirits? Here is a channel regarded as sacred, through which Satan works for the accomplishment of his purposes. The fallen angels who do his bidding appear as messengers from the spirit world. While professing to bring the living into communication with the dead, the prince of evil exercises his bewitching influence upon their minds."(GC11, 551)
