My manager made a mistake in creating the next two weeks' schedules. She overscheduled people in departments that had suddenly slowed down a lot. Then, she decided to cancel some of the shifts. A week ago a different manager gave me a post it note with a shift of mine they decided to cancel. It was fine by me; I have a lot of school work to deal with.

But then, the manager called me the other day and asked if it was ok if she cancelled another one of my shifts. Thing is, I thought they already dealt with the situation. It seems like I'm losing ONE too many shifts. I said yes she could cancel it (I have schoolwork piling up).

I feel like I'm not needed there or something. I've been working there for 3 yrs and I do a great job.

Has anyone got through this and can offer insight?

do you think they're trying to fire me? they ARE doing this to other people who were given extra shifts (their departments have slowed with work).

usually i get as many hours as i want, even if i dont want them. im still getting 25 hrs a week (more than enough) despite the cancelled shifts. but im worried that on future schedules, they'll give me few hours??

do u think im being pushed out the door, or just being paranoid?

It sounds like a typical retail scheduling issue. It's not uncommon to have wide swings in the amount of hours one works. When I worked retail my schedule would vary from 40 hrs one week then down to 20 the next week.

A lot of times having hours cut can be attributed to budgeted hours a department manager or schedule writer has to keep. If the budget is scaled back, then someone has to lose hours.

Another possibility could be new hires vying for hours themselves. In addition, they may be giving you less hours in consideration of your schoolwork so you don't get stressed out.

I doubt that your hours are being scaled back in an effort to be pushed out of the organization - especially around the holidays.

If it bothers you, then go talk to your boss(es) and see what's going on. Just discuss that your hours being cut came as unexpected and you are wondering if there is something that can be done to get more (if you desire them). You can being up suggestions such as moving to another department or open your availability if it's a little narrow compared to the times they need people.

Good luck. I hope that helped.

It doesn't sound like your job is in any danger, sounds more like it's just what they said, a scheduling error that they are now correcting.

See what happens over the next few weeks, but quit worrying in the meantime. It sounds like this actually came at a good time for you, so you could get caught up on your schoolwork.
