Some teachers/administrators honestly don't realize that student-initiated prayer is allowed. My husband is taking education classes, and one professor insisted that any teacher who sees a student praying at school for any reason, whether alone or in a group, was obligated to stop it. My hubby printed out the summaries of Supreme Court cases defining the differences in teacher-led prayer and student-led prayer. To the prof's credit, she acknowledged she had misunderstood the law. But how many new teachers had she sent out to schools with that same misinformation? I suspect misunderstanding is the cause of a lot of the lawsuits and arguments over prayer in school.

It was outlawed by the First Amendment.
It just took a while to get it done.....
Prayer belongs in your mind, your home and your church...not in the public arena.

It isn't outlawed. What was "outlawed" was teachers forcing student prayers.
BTW, several states, including Indiana, have a required 30 seconds of silence every morning.

Group prayer has not been outlawed. teacher- or administrator-led prayer has been found to be unconstitutional. Students are free to practice whatever religion they choose - and should be.

It never was, you can still pray with your friends so long as it does not disrupt your teacher. My friends and I used to pray every morning in a group before school started.

In Texas you can pray during the 30-seconds of silence we have every morning after the Texas Pledge.
Alternatively, they added, "Under God," to the Texas Pledge (Quite unnecessarily, really), making me hate my home state even more (Aside from the horrendous weather).

both my parents told me that when they were younger they would have prayer after the pledge of allegiance. that was in the 60's.
p.s. they went to public schools.
when i was in high school (98-02) we had prayer around the flag pole. but that had to stop my jr. year.
