I own a Chevy Cobalt, its a piece of crap, its been in the shop more in the last year than I've driven it. Go with the Toyota, you will be more happy with the standard options in the toyota than having no standard options with the cobalt.
The cobalt manual transmissions are aluminum and mine was rebuilt at 16,000 miles. Doesn't say much for a supposedly "american" built car. Which by the way the chevy cobalt tranny is built in Italy, and the engine comes from Mexico.
I'm trading in my car for a 2008 Toyota Tundra Crewmax.

Exactly. And how long it'll keep it's value. This is no brainer unless you're just trying to stimulate American economy. I'd buy a toyo over a chevy any day, esp the cobalt (it's not very comfortable). We had a corolla for years and years and years. Finally the A/C went out and we still regret selling it.

Cobalt is the better current value, Toyota has a better residual value (trade-in/resale).
Neither one is a "top of the line" car, they are, in fact, closer to "baseline" models, which I personally tend to stay away from.

Don't even think about a cobalt.... It's an even bigger sh!tbox the the cavalier it replaced. You can't go wrong with a corolla.

The chevy will be more reliable simply because it is newer. Also, if price is important (it is for me) saving $2,000, and getting a newer model simply seem like th ebetter way to go.

with regular maintenance and car - the cobalt should last 150,000 miles or more.
The Yota about the same.
