My cats developed a condition on their chins very similar to what looks like acne- it is nowhere else on their bodies. First they got what looked like flea dirt- lots of small black dots. Then the hair on their chins fell out and they have raised white bumps and black dots, similar to blackheads. It looks really gross but does not seem to bother the cats. Someone told me this is called cat acne. How do I clear it up? What products can I use?

Hi there...there are several contributing factors which can cause acne, however the leading cause appears to be when cats who eat from plastic bowls, which can harbour the bacteria. By changing to stainless, glass or ceramic bowls/dishes this will help begin to eliminate the first line of cause.

If your cats eat/drink out of plastic dishes that can cause acne in both cats and dogs. The plastic harbors bacteria. Even when put through your dishwasher regularly they're breeding grounds for germs and this causes cats/dogs to get acne when their chins rub against the plastic dish. Switching to a ceramic or metal dish can clear up the problem in just a couple of weeks if this is the case.

Right now my skin is perfectly clear, for the first time in 3 years. It's been about 9 weeks and all my acne is gone. It is such a great feeling to wake up with clear skin.

It may not bother the cats, you're right. It's like human acne in that sense really - mostly it only bothers us because it doesn't look nice!
You won't find any products from a store that will clear this up. Acne requires antibiotics and steroidal creams, which are not available in stores. If you want it sorted, go to a vet.

I agree with "Fluffy" and "Seattle", it's caused by the plastic bowls...switch to glass, ceramic or metal...something that is not porous and can not harbor bacteria.

ick...thats sounds like maybe an infection or reaction of some sort. Get them to a vet asap!
