I've always found that if I approach them pre season and ask for permission to hunt their land, in return for maybe helping with some chores, repairing fences ( I even painted a barn for hunting rights) that they are very receptive.

Depends on the state you choose to hunt in.

I have yet to meet one who was a vegan....

Out west or down south, if you hunt property without permission, you can get arrested or killed. New England states etc, on the other hand, have what they call "open land" tradition. In "open land" states, private property is understood to be open to hunting by the public unless it's posted otherwise. It's up to the owner to tell folks to stay off....not the hunter to ask for permission.

Like I said, I've never met a farmer who was a vegan. Most folks I know would get a shotgun and go out with you.

It depends on the farmer. They REALLY get pissed when you hunt and don't ask..if they catch you on their land without permission. It is private property so you HAVE to ask. Its against the law if you trespass. I would have a hard time just walking up to someones home that I didn't know and asking them if you can hunt on their land. Why dont you just hunt on state land instead.

Randy C's answer is good and basically covers what I would say. Some farmers might even go with you to hunt. I always offer part of the kill, since most farmers like to hunt but usually don't have time too.

I don't know about this open land tradition up in the north east....
as far as I am concerned with my land I won't let anyone hunt my land that I don't know.....period...
personal injury lawyers worry me ....if you step on a rusty nail, I don't need to be sued for your medical bills....

so family, and friends...sure
someone I don't know.........it ain't worth the risk....

There is truly no way to know without asking. Whats the worst that'll happen? They will say no. I have asked plenty of people to use there land, and generally in my experience they say yes

All of the landowners I know would prefer you to ask for permission. I have never had anyone get mad at me for asking. I've been getting permission from various landowners around the country for the past 25+ years without incident.
