I've been offered a job (in the UK) depending on medical clearance. However, they ask about depression (which I've suffered from last year), fits (I had 4 in my life related to low blow sugar) and hospitalisation due to mental illness (I've been hospitalised when I was anorexic 7 years ago).
Can they refuse me the job because of my medical past?

My hospitalisation wasn't in a mental institution! Just a medical centre for eating disorders!.

Only if it won't allow you to do the job. But it does not sound like it to me, so I think you should be okay. If they go by something that has happened several years ago, thats a lawsuit waiting to happen.

The short answer is yes but only if it affects your ability to do the job you should still be honest as the truth will almost inevitably come out at some stage and you could then be dismissed for falsifying information.

These questions may be asked for a purpose especially if they have highlighted specific areas.

The blood sugar and anorexic treatments shouldn't make any difference as both seem to have been resolved some time ago.

The depression may, does the job involve a lot of stress or working alone? if so it may not be the right thing for you.

I am so sorry to hear your plight and my heart goes out to you ....... I suspect all that history would not look good to a potential employer and remember ... you have to be suitable for the position .... and just like qualifications, your health must stack up too. Tough and unfair, but employers do have to select the right person. There would be no point in asking for a detailed medical history or even a medical exam if there was no need for it. Suitability for the job is paramount, just like they could let you go if you were in their employ when your illnesses occurred. But you have been bold and totally correct in declaring the matter ... just keep your fingers crossed and keep trying. Not all employers are that judgemental on these things.

First things first, don't lie - they could use that in theory as grounds for dismissal if it were to come out at a later date. as long everything is under control and being monitored by doctors, then they couldn't refuse you on medical grounds. the best person to ask about this is your GP, i'm sure they'd be very understanding about any concerns you have.

I'm no expert on human resources in the UK, but in the US, the answer is no unless it's directly related to the job itself. But I assume it's the same thing in Britain.

Technically, if you can still do the job, then you should not be rejected, but the chances are high that they will.

Their thinking will be - mental illness, we dont want a mental person here, she might go crazy on us.

Only if it will impair your ability to carry out your duties. Disability discrimination is now illegal.
