Software compatibility means that the PS3 is going to use software to play PS2 games. Do you know anything about emulators? Basically, the PS3 becomes an emulator to run PS2 games.

Hardware compatibility means that the PS3 has the hardware to run PS2 games.

The 60 gb version has the emotion engine (which was the CPU used to run PS2 games), so it uses hardware for backward compatibility.

Hardware is better than software because in order to run software, programmers have to write the program, while hardware has the CPU to run the game.

The 60 gb can play PS2 and PS1 games. It might be tough to find a 60 gb in stores because Sony stopped making the 60 gb back around May.

If you can't find the 60 gb, your next option is to get the 80 gb. It uses software emulation to play PS2 games. It's not that bad, but it just means that there are less PS2 games that are playable on the PS3, but as updates come in, more games will be playable.

Do NOT get the 40 gb if you just play PS2 games on the PS3. The 40 gb cannot play PS2 games.

Hardware PS2 compatability is on US and Japanese PS3s and it means all the PS2 games can be played straight away. Software PS2 compatability means the software to run the PS@ games is limited so only about 80% of PS2 games can be played and this is on EU PS3s. The number of games Software compatable PS3s play increases in every update [every few months]

the 40 gig PS3 doesnt play any PS2 games

Ok lets see if I can simplify it.

What it means is that you can put the same things you put on a PS2 on a PS3. All you need to know when your buying it is how much GB it has. They are all the same except that the 40 Gb cant play PS2 games which wont really matter since more than likely you will buy ps3 games.

1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB versio, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.

yeh mate all 60Gb are Hardware PS2 backward Compatibility.
your best bet is to find a 60Gb.
also if you think there is not enough space you can remove the harddrive and insert a bigger one.
