Many of the products Amex offers requires a fairly high score of at least in the high 600's.
Some of the products Amex offers are regular credit cards that you can pay monthly (if you choose to) and some of the credit cards "have" to be paid in full every month.

There is one that many people, but not all, are getting with scores in the very low 600's. The Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold seems to be the easiest to get at this point.
If you are denied, call and ask for reconsideration. Some with low scores that have been denied have ended up being approved when they did a recon call.

It is a regular credit card with a monthly billing statement. It does have an annual fee but the fee is waived for the first year.

Unless you travel a great deal and you do not mind paying an annual fee for the rewards, you might call soon after receiving the card and tell the CSR that you have decided that card does not suit your purposes at this time and ask what cards are available for you to convert that card to.

If the CSR says it is not possible, say thank you, hang up and try with a different CSR at another time. Eventually you will get a CSR who will convert it for you.

If your scores are in the low 600's, you might only qualify for the Blue to convert to. The Blue is a regular rewards credit card with a monthly billing statement and no annual fee.
(I am extremely happy with my Blue, it is my favorite Amex)

If you are approved, Amex also has a credit limit increase request button that will be listed in one of the links on your card page. Be very careful and wait 6 months (and every 6 months after) before hitting it. If Amex starts you out at $1000 or $2000, don't request much more than matching amounts if you hit the button.

If you get greedy and request a huge increase, Amex "may" give it to you - but - Amex may give it and then may credit limit decrease your account, close your account or put you in financial review where you would have to provide past tax forms to keep the card.

As for credit scores vs income that the first poster mentioned, there are quite a few people whose income barely makes it over the the standard required income amount that Amex requres and have more than one card with them and also fairly large credit limits.

Your FICO score is based upon the ratios of your income vs actual debt vs potential debt. When you added the AMEX card, you increased your potential debt ceiling. Charge card, credit card makes no difference. They look at any way possible to lower your FICO score, gives lenders reason to raise your interest rates.

Stay away from credit cards. They make all the rules and change the rules anytime they want. Just read the fine print.

Pay as you go and live on less than you make and you will win with money.

There is no reason to worship at the alter of the almighty fico score.

Debt Free is definitely the way to be!
