I just failed smog on the "oxides of nitrogen" ... I wanted to check the egr valve and fittings as they recommended. My Chiltons said it's located under the intake manifold, but I can't find it ! HELP !

you dont have one, replace the catalytic converter and make sure your fan clutch and cooling system are working properly, retrieve the diagnostic trouble codes if you can.

your car should not have an egr valve.
oxides of nitrogen emmissions increase with higher than normal combustion temps
[these can be caused by but are not limited to]
vacume leaks that the o2 sensor may be masking [small ones such as climate control or cruise control leaks,
larger ones such as cracked intake gasket
timing problems such as ign. too far advanced [i believe 1988 was last year of electronic distributor, i know 1989 uses a crank trigger off of the flywheel] faulty knock sensor [rare] cam timing a tooth off.
other common possibilities include a failing air mass unit[if this is the case don't forget to replace thermostat in air filter housing]
or a dead o2 sensor [should vary between .2 and.9 volts fairly rapidly at warm idle]
i hope these tips help good luck

There is not an EGR on a 88 . Didn't start until 89.If your engine is tuned properly , you either have a bad cat or to much compression . Two ways to high compression. 1. Head has been milled. 2. Carbon build up in compression chamber.Replacing the cat may be the easiest fix.

I didn't know they had an EGR 'cause my 740 2.3L doesn't.

I failed smog too and I just got a three way catalytic converter. It cuts down NOX as well as CO.
