You need to keep the dog from licking the incision or he could remove the stitches/glue. You didn't say what breed or size it was but take a wash cloth (for a toy dog) or a towel (for a larger breed dog) and fold it so that it is the width that is the length of the dog's neck -- then wrap it around the neck (not strangling the dog of course but snug - couple of fingers should easil fit between towel and neck) and tape it around the neck so that it sort of acts like a soft cervical collar - it will keep him from bending his head around to lick the area -- be sure and stay with him as puppies can figure out all sorts of ways to get in trouble but barring having an elizabethan collar (they are available at petco/petsmart) fitted to him, this will at least deter him for a while until maybe it isn't botherhing him so much. You can use a little ice pack (wrapped so you don't freeze the poor guy!) on the area to help reduce swelling and pain -- just hold it there for a few minutes -- not longer than about ten at the most and do that a few times every now and then but he will soon forget about it. Thank you for being a responsible dog owner and having your guy neutered!

possible complications

Although general anesthesia and surgery always involve a certain amount of risk, it is extremely unlikely that your dog will have any serious trouble during the operation. Afterwards, infections are possible but rare. Much more frequent are problems from licking at the suture line. Even though we can eliminate most incision chewing by careful trimming of the hair (to reduce clipper irritation), gentle scrubbing and thorough rinsing of the skin (to reduce soap irritation) and using buried sutures (so there is nothing to lick at) some dogs are going to lick the incision. If we see persistent licking before your dog goes home, we will put on a lampshade type collar to keep him from reaching the incision. A little licking is normal, but if your dog seems to be really after those stitches, bring him in: we will check his incision and if necessary, fit him with a protective collar.

What? The paper said he has to be one year old for an e-collar?! What nonsense - you can put them on any age, you can put them on bunnies and even budgies!

Go and get one from your vet , it's just a matter of getting the right size that's all. He really mustn't lick the wound - although he's unlikely to pull the stitches open unless he properly chews it, he'll introduce bacteria into the wound and it will get infected. You might be able to get e-collars from petsmart, not sure.

A dog does not have to be a year old to wear the Elizabethan collar !! If he rips out those stitches, the poor dog is going to be under anesthetic yet again to be re-sutured. Get an E-collar on him and keep it on until his stitches come out except when you're right in the room with him and able to distract him if he tries licking or tearing the stitches!

measure his neck and go to the pet store and buy him an e-collar, it will keep him from licking. If his sutures don't start to heal or look better then take him back to the vet.

There's no age restriction on the e-collar. If the vet didn't give you one, your local petstore should sell some.

Didn't the vet give you one of those plastic dishes to put around his neck? Those are the best - they look silly, but they work --
Otherwise, you will have to watch him all the time -- it will start to get more and more irritated and itchy --
