sports if he's into that, cars are usually pretty good, computer or console games if he's into that...without knowing more about his personality, it's difficult to say...there are all different types, you know.
My advice would be to just ask him what he likes to do in his off time and let the conversation grow from there...a contrived conversation usually doesn't get very far because you'll run out of things to say. Try to find some common ground and common interests....say "I like going to so and so or doing this and that...where do you like to go or what do you like to do?" How he answers will give you a clue on what to say next.
