Do they look at you as being inconsiderate by not offering? Is It expectant? I was brought up to always wash the dishes. My mother always had me in the kitchen no matter where we went. After moving out of the house and living on my own I coutinued Always offering and doing the dishes after eating.
Besides your families house , when invited for dinner should I always ask if they need help in the kitchen? I find that outsiders don't want you doing their dishes but family wants you to do them.

I am a guest in their house, I would ask if they need help with the dishes. Most household have a dishwasher today.
I never expect help with the dishes from my guests, they are my guests and guests shouldn't have to work after dinner.

If your host is going to start cleaning the dishes right after dinner, while you are still there, then I would definitely offer to help. However, if everyone continues to talk and entertain each other following dinner, I would not break the flow to ask to help do the dishes. The host has invited you to be their guest, because they want to enjoy your company (unless its obligatory in-law type stuff)... so enjoy yourself and go along with whatever the host is doing, and don't worry too much about doing the dishes.

The only thing that a good host/hostess should expect from their guests is having a good time. If a guest offers to help clean up the host/hostess should refuse. However if the guest insists then they're on their own!

I would never expect someone that I invited into my home to do the dishes. It is a nice gesture to offer to help but it should not be expected.

I prefer to load my dishwasher myself. To me guests are guests and I wouldn't expect them to help. They always ask if there is anything they can do and of course, I say thank you, but no. Too many people in the kitchen trying to help just get in the way.

Hosts shouldn't put guests to work. That's nonsense.

Guests shouldn't offer either.

When my friends or even family invite me over and then ask me to help with some kind of chore, i will think twice about ever visiting them again.

I agree with the first answer--always offer, and let the host(ess) make the call. It is a very thoughtful offer, either way.

Well I'm not for sure about actually doing them, but I do think that offering is a nice gesture.....
