To a painter, of course they are, no less so than yellow and purple. But to a scientist, black IS NOT a color (because a black object absorbs all the colors of the visible spectrum and reflects none of them to the eyes), but white IS a color (because white reflects all the colors of the visible light spectrum to the eyes).

Pure black is the ABSENCE of colour. There is no such thing as pure white, as the colour temperature of the light source that you are using determines what you perceive as white. So, a "white" surface may look yellowish under artificial lights and bluish on a cloudless day. The eye gets accustomised to the ambient lighting after a time and perceives these altered whites as "pure". So, you can have bluish black, reddish black and they are "colours", but pure black isn't. The nearest thing to pure black is a piece of glass covered in soot from a candle flame.

Yep, everyone's said it already, but basically black is the shadow (absence) of color, and white is all the colors combined, making a brilliant light.

(& No, they aren't colors individually).

White is the combination of all the colors of the visible light spectrum.

Black is the color of objects that do not reflect light in any part of the visible spectrum.

if you are talking about pigments such as paints or dyes, then yes. They are colours. If you are talking about light, then black is the absence of light so not really a colour. White light is the full spectrum of lights wavelengths.

I always understood.... black to be the presence of all color and white to be the absence of all color.
